HOH sponsors three special event fund-raisers every year – the “One-of-A-Kind Fashion Show and Luncheon”, usually held in February; the “Tournament of Hope” golf event, held in the spring; and the agency’s signature event, the “Meal or No Meal Poverty Potluck”. |
The Fashion Show is unique, in that it features “haute couture” thrift store clothing – quality garments, often from high fashion “brand” names, which have been donated during the year. Also, all the items are selected and modeled by HOH volunteers – including a few HOH Board members! Attendees often remark how different this event is from other fashion shows – “It’s fun!” |
The Golf Tournament also is a little different than most because of how well it is organized and how smoothly it is run. This is not surprising, as HOH has been very fortunate to have as chair of its tournament committee the former golf pro of some of the best courses on Cape Cod and in Puerto Rico. The 13th Annual Tournament of Hope is scheduled to take place May 30, 2008 at Lost Lake Golf Club – for more information, telephone 286-HOPE (4673). |
While it has a tongue-in-cheek name, the Meal or No Meal Poverty Potluck has a serious twofold purpose: to raise needed funds for the HOH service programs and to raise the public’s awareness of the substantial amount of poverty that exists in Martin County. In addition to program speakers and entertainment, attendees are served a “community meal dinner.” HOH’s partners – churches who prepare free community dinners one night a week for the poor and lonely – prepare and serve the same food to the Poverty Potluck diners who paid $100 per person. In only two years, this event has become HOH’s biggest and best fund-raiser. The 2008 Meal or No Meal poverty Potluck is scheduled for November 7th.
