Library hosts food drive for House of Hope

PRESS RELEASE DATE: Oct. 15, 2008

House of Hope and the Martin County Library System are collaborating on an effort called “Hungry to Read” that will include a food drive and a library orientation event.

The first phase of the Hungry to Read collaboration is the food drive, launching Oct. 20 at each of the Martin County library locations.

Library visitors will be able to drop off donations of non-perishable grocery items in the bright yellow crates stacked in the lobby areas of each site: Blake Library in Stuart, Hoke Library in Jensen Beach, Robert Morgade Library in South Stuart, Hobe Sound Public Library and the Elisabeth Lahti Library in Indiantown.

Library representatives offered assistance after hearing about shortages at House of Hope, the leading provider of food to Martin County’s poor. The food drive will answer an immediate need and later, the library orientation event will help families tap more resources to improve their lives.

House of Hope is particularly short of the following items but welcomes donations of any non-perishable food and personal hygiene products.

  • Canned tomatoes and fruit.

  • Canned milk.

  • Canned meat and fish.

  • Cereal and rice.

  • Laundry detergent.

  • Toothpaste and soap.

  • Toilet paper.

  • Baby diapers.

Scheduled for January 2009, Hungry to Read Phase 2 is a project initiated by the Martin County Library System and its Center for Reading & Literacy.

Phase 2 will include a special event at the Blake Library that will help families become acquainted with the array of services available to them. These range from simply learning to look up a book, using the copier and joining children’s activities to attending citizenship classes, computer instruction or English lessons.

This is a pilot project, and if successful, it would be expanded to other House of Hope and library branches.
