Free seminar promotes
electricity savings, assistance programs
PRESS RELEASE DATE: MARCH
24, 2009
FPL, House of Hope and the
Martin County Community Services department are
hosting a free seminar March 31 to help people
save on electricity and manage their FPL bills.
The seminar will be held 6
p.m. to 7 p.m. March 31 at the Martin County
Administrative Building, 2401 SE Monterey Road,
Fourth Floor.
The seminar is designed to
help people learn about:
-
Ways to save on
electricity usage.
-
Options for billing and
payment.
-
Special consumer
assistance programs.
House of Hope and Martin
County government recently approached FPL to
help find ways to alleviate the problems people
face when they fall behind on their bills. The
seminar is a response by FPL to help people
manage their power consumption and bill
payments. The seminar is in English, and
Spanish-speaking translators and materials will
be available.
“House of Hope pays
thousands of dollars to FPL each year as we
assist families who face having their
electricity turned off,” said Patrick Slattery,
executive director of House of Hope. The agency
helps clients countywide, with branches in Hobe
Sound, Indiantown, Jensen Beach and the Golden
Gate area of Stuart.
“We help hundreds of people
who have suddenly lost their jobs, who have
suffered a major health problem, or just faced
other catastrophic bills that have stretched low
wages or Social Security payments past their
ability to pay,” Slattery said. “We hope this
seminar, and future efforts on the part of FPL,
will help some people find ways to alleviate
their financial burdens.”
