Used furniture changes lives
at House of Hope
PRESS RELEASE DATE: JUNE 4,
2009
A gently used sofa, a
kitchen table and chairs, a bedroom dresser.
Each of these items could help a struggling
family or senior citizen avoid homelessness,
keep the lights on, or pay for essential
medicines.
During the summer in Martin
County, when monetary gifts are low but needs
are high, House of Hope would like to remind
people that donations to the agency’s resale
stores make a huge difference to its clients.
The resale stores produce one-third of the
income for House of Hope, which for 25
years has contributed toward basic human needs –
food, clothing, shelter -- for people struggling
through difficult times. Furniture, appliances,
clothing, dishes, cookware, beds and bedding,
TVs, bicycles, books and so much more are
accepted and sold.
Many donated items also are
given away to people who would otherwise go
without. In 2008, the agency’s Clothes Closet
program gave away 11,000 donated garments and
household items.
“Every day, House of Hope
sees people in desperate financial situations –
people who previously were in control of their
lives but who are now in desperate straits as
they struggle to pay bills and purchase food
with limited resources,” said executive director
Patrick Slattery.
Income from the resale
stores helps to support the agency’s Emergency
Financial Assistance program, which provides
temporary aid for people in crisis. Last year,
the average amount of assistance was about $250,
which can be life changing – paying for rent,
utilities and medicine.
House of Hope offers free
pickup of large household items. People also can
drop off donations during regular business hours
at any of the agency’s four locations: Stuart,
Hobe Sound, Indiantown and Jensen Beach.
Call (772) 286-4673 to
arrange for pickup or find out hours of
operation.
