PRESS RELEASE DATE:
MAY 20, 2011
The annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive
delivered about 80,000 pounds of food to House of Hope on
May 14.
Stamp out Hunger is conducted by
National Association of Letter Carriers and is the nation’s
largest single-day food drive.
“We are so appreciative to the letter
carriers for conducting this drive and for all the people
who donate food,” said House of Hope board member Charlie
D’Agata. “It is a huge effort, and we cannot imagine trying
to fulfill our mission without this one-day influx of food,
which is enough to feed clients for about three to four
months.”
More than 100 volunteers worked hard on
May 14 and May 16 to haul, sort and weigh the food at House
of Hope.
Next, the agency will distribute the
food to Martin County residents throughout the critical
summer months, when employment is low and children are out
of school, creating greater need and higher demand for House
of Hope services. The agency has service centers in Stuart,
Hobe Sound, Indiantown and Jensen Beach.
All House of Hope’s programs –
providing food, clothing, household items, financial
assistance and case management – offer temporary assistance
to families during personal crises beyond their control.
The food program provided the
equivalent of about 237,000 meals last year, helping
families and children as well as fixed-income senior
citizens, veterans, and the recently unemployed. With 29
percent of all children under 18 living in poverty in Martin
County, and 20,400 residents overall below the official
poverty line, the demand for such services is high.
