Alyssa and Anthony Golino have completed their third annual Peanut Butter & Jelly Drive to benefit the House of Hope food pantries.

The two young volunteers had a goal to collect 2,000 pounds of peanut butter and jelly from June 1-Aug. 31. They have already more than doubled their goal, and donations are still being picked up from collection sites. The total as of Monday, Sept. 9 was... 5,905 pounds! That's about triple their goal!

The largest single donation just rolled in -- 1,212 jars -- thanks to a letter that Anthony and Alyssa wrote to the Florida Peanut Producers Association. The executive director, Ken Barton, and his wife, Rhonda, drove down from the panhandle of Florida to deliver the peanut butter to House of Hope.

Another major event during the drive was a visit by U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, who wanted to meet and congratulate Anthony and Alyssa on their effort.

In August 2012, the kids raised 1,000 pounds of peanut butter and jelly, exceeding their goal of 600 pounds. It just keeps getting bigger and better and so very important to House of Hope clients during the difficult summer months for our food pantry clients.

Alyssa, 12, and Anthony, 14, thank everyone who participated in the drive. House of Hope will be hosting a thank you reception for the businesses and organizations (below) who participated. The event will be 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 30. To RSVP, please contact their mom, Gina Golino: (772) 221-1660 or gina@fwd-electric-air.com.

ABOUT PB&J and HOUSE OF HOPE

Peanut butter is a popular item for food pantries because it is nutrient-rich, has a long shelf life and doesn't require cooking.

House of Hope’s food pantries in Stuart, Hobe Sound, Indiantown and Jensen Beach are the largest providers of food to Martin County residents in need. Last year, the agency gave out 191 tons of food – the equivalent of about 299,000 meals. Food items include canned food, rice, pasta, cereal, fresh produce, meat, bread and, of course, peanut butter and jelly.

House of Hope also helps Martin County residents in need by offering clothing, furniture, financial assistance and case management services.
